Caruso is one of my two favorite makers for ready-to-wear tailoring, consistently releasing stylish, well-made garments that reflect a feel for current tastes without buying in completely to what’s trendy. Their designs can range from classic to wild, unified by an appreciation of texture and an almost playful approach to color and pattern.
They’re also too rich for my blood at full retail, with sport coats typically retailing well-north of $1,000. Thankfully, we have YOOX, the behemoth Italian fashion clearinghouse, where Caruso sport coats can be found for half off—or even more when they’re out of season.
Which brings us to the jacket pictured above, which reflects Caruso’s awareness of current preferences in tailoring: soft shoulders, high lapel gorge, slightly wider lapels. Quarter-lined, it’s made in an open-weave fabric blend, balancing the drape and wrinkle-resistance of wool with the strength of silk and the breathability of linen. The brown colorway should pair well with trousers in tan, cream or light grey.
In other words, it’s pretty much the perfect summer sport coat, and today only it’s an extra 25% off at YOOX. I’d have probably picked one up myself if someone hadn’t grabbed the last one in my size. Sure it’s out of season, but with October highs in the mid-80s here in Northern California, I could probably have gotten a couple weeks use out of it before storing it for next summer.
